Presidential Report May 21, 2002Thank You A special thank you to all the Board members for attending the multitude of Graduations over the past weeks and for awarding the Trustee Scholarships in the high schools. Also, thanks to Verdell Pugh who joined us for the Adult High School Spring Fling and to Sid Miller for representing us in Tallahassee at the Florida Board Strategic Planning Seminar. Focus Group In addition, I'd like to thank Verdell for allowing a Student Focus Group in her Business Class at Seminole High School. Verdell also suggested weekly visits from an SCC recruiter. This effort should be very instrumental in recruiting students from Seminole High. SCC Art Student Congratulations to Brenda Thiel, a Seminole Community College student, who was recently accepted to the Art Institute of Chicago. Brenda was also awarded a $10,000 grant. Baseball Update/Softball Update SCC BASEBALL Team - Finished 6th at the State Tournament SOFTBALL - Finished 4th at the State Tournament I'm happy to report that so far this year we have 31,842 students enrolled in 2001/02 compared to 28,326 in 2000/01. Also, summer enrollment is running far ahead of last year. There is a 22% increase in applications this summer and a 9% increase in the actual enrollment rate of those applicants. Nursing Donation You may have seen the article in last week's Orlando Sentinel related to the donation that we have received from the area hospitals to increase our nursing program. Orlando Regional Hospital and Florida Hospital are contributing $150,000 over three years with $25,000 from Central Florida Regional. It will allow us to increase our nursing program by 35 students and initiate the first-in-the-state part-time evening web-enhanced program. Congratulations to Angela Kersenbrock for her leadership with this program. HVAC Program Some of you have had questions about the phase-out of our daytime HVAC program. Due to low enrollments and the retirement of the faculty member in HVAC, we looked for a way to continue this program. In making it an apprenticeship program, we could actually enhance the training and provide a way to pay for the program for students. There were 18 students enrolled in the program this year. All but 5 will be finishing this year with those 5 finishing in December. We will offer them a way to complete their education; but, in the future, students will be recruited for the apprenticeship program that will provide them with jobs, tuition and training in residential and commercial HVAC. Legislative Thank You Tentatively, I would ask that you reserve the date of June 13, Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m. for a Legislative Thank You at Universal Studios. Universal Studios, Valencia Community College and Seminole Community College will be co-hosting this event for the legislators and their aides at City Jazz. |
