Presidential Report February 19, 2002

Chris Hamilton

Chris joined SCC in the summer of 1997, having left the Division of Community Colleges where she was Chief for the Bureau of Financial and Business Services. You all know Chris, she is phenomenal. She has given countless hours to SCC. It is not unusual for me to get an email from her during the early morning or late night hours. Her sole motivation has been to make sure that we live up to our motto of "Being ourselves. Only better."

Chris has been wanting to retire for the past two years and I have been talking her out of it. Well, I didn't talk fast enough this time. So, after nearly five years, Chris will be leaving us at the end of June. Getting us through one more legislative and budgeting cycle.

(Comments by Chris)

I am currently considering transferring some of the functions from the Business Area to other areas and am looking at how we can save some $$ for next year, given our budget constraints. Stay tuned.

Dream Auction

A success!!! Thanks to Pam Weber and the Foundation team, as well as our entire community. We had nearly 100 SCC students and employees who helped to bring the Dream Auction home to SCC.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Award

Seminole Community College's Pi Lambda Chapter received the 2001 Pinnacle Scholarship Award for increasing their membership by 10% over the previous year. This certainly recognizes the growth that we have had in our Honors area.

Brain Bowl

SCC's Brain Bowl Team won first place in this year's Central Regional Brain Bowl Tournament on Feb. 8th. It was an extremely close competition that ended in a three-way tie with CFCC and LSCC. The team with the highest point total for the 6 matches was declared the winner - SCC.

Success Story

Chris Werthe was abandoned by his mother and showed up on his grandparents door in Central Florida. They took him in and he enrolled at the Adult High School in the Winter of 2000. He graduated with high honors and was accepted into the Navy's nuclear power school. He excelled in the school and his commander encouraged him to apply to the Naval Academy. Chris' grandfather recently advised us that he has been accepted to the US Naval Academy for next fall.

Student Activities Retreat

You will be invited to participate in our annual "Success Stories" session at the Student Activities Leadership Retreat held on Friday, April 12, at 4 p.m. in the Student Center. Also, the 6th Annual Student Activities Leadership Banquet is scheduled for April 26 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center.

Presidential Evaluation

You should have received a copy of the evaluation instrument. Please complete your evaluation and contact my office so that I can set aside time to discuss your individual comments. Our goal is to get this completed before the March 19th Board meeting.

Lady Raider Basketball

The Lady Raiders played Florida Community College last weekend and clinched the Mid-Florida Conference Championship! The team has won 15 straight conference games over the past two years. They play their last home game this Wednesday and then on to the State Tournament in Mariana on March 6-9.

Legislative Report

"Our Man In Tallahassee" has returned home today to report on what is happening in the hallowed halls of the Senate and the House. Last week, Rick and I were up there as part of the Orlando Chamber Fly-In. (Comments from Rick Lee.)

(Comments from Paul Hull)

I-4 Donation

Dr. David Harrison will report on our efforts in the I-4 Corridor. I am happy to announce that we are receiving a donation of approximately 6 acres of land from Pizzuti. Ken Simback is here to represent Pizzuti. He and Sid Miller have been the driving forces behind this donation. Thank you, Sid Miller! (Comments from Dr. Harrison and Ken Simback)

Also, this donation will allow us to free up some $$ to dedicate to a permanent facility in Altamonte. We are meeting on Monday with the Altamonte Springs planner to begin discussions about possible permanent sites for SCC.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RICK LEE!!!
