Presidential Report January 15, 2002Enrollment Update In the fall, we experienced an 18% increase in credit enrollment. Given the budget cutbacks, I am not sure that we thought it possible to equal that increase this spring. However, I am pleased (I think) to report that we are experiencing a 22.5% increase in credit enrollment and an overall 20.5% increase in fundable enrollment. Our Basic Literacy and ESOL enrollment is up 52%. We all need to offer thanks to the faculty and staff who are coping so well with this increase at a time when we have cancelled 180 sections of classes. I would also like to report that registration went incredibly well due to our reliance on Dick Hamann and his staff and our website, which experienced 98,000 visitors during December. PeopleSoft I would like to thank the Board for allowing the College to capitalize on the PeopleSoft end-of-the-year discounts. Based on a phone call from Rick Lee, I was able to contact each of you over the holidays and we proceeded with the purchase. The formal acceptance is in your packet tonight. Intern from the University of Texas Barbara Burrows is a doctoral student in the Community College program at the University of Texas and will be interning at SCC during the Spring Term. She was a faculty member at Santa Fe CC, as well as, president of the faculty senate. She came highly recommended by both Dr. Larry Tyree, president at Santa Fe Community College, and Dr. John Roueche, head of the UT program. Barbara has both a BS in Mathematics Education and a MA in Teaching from UF. She has "advanced to candidacy" in the Ph.D. program. Barbara will be working with Paul Hull in the legislative arena and with the VPs and me on special projects. Dr. Roueche will be here next week to check on Barbara and will be doing two sessions for us on the "community college future" for the staff. Heritage Jubilee Last Friday, we were honored to host the Bethune-Cookman Concert Chorale, dancers and orchestra at the revival of SCC's Heritage Jubilee. It was planned and beautifully executed by the African-American Cultural Forum and the Black Faculty and Staff Association, particularly Annye Refoe and Dr. Stephen Caldwell Wright. It was an incredible evening. The College honored Mother Blanche Weaver and Mr. Herbert Cherry for their dedication to our community. Also honored was Dr. Rebecca W. Steele, Chorale Conductor, from Bethune-Cookman College. Council of Presidents and Community College Trustee Joint Meeting Dr. English and Sid Miller will be representing the Board at the joint meeting of the Community College Presidents' Council and Community College Trustees in Tallahassee on January 24-25. We have also been invited by the President of Florida State University to view the FSU/Clemson basketball game from the President's Box. We anticipate that we will be joined by some of the legislators (another lobbying opportunity). To the other Trustees - it is not too late to join us!!
