The Scribe Publication Awards

For the second consecutive year and third time since 1998, SCC's student newspaper, The Scribe, has taken top honors in the annual Florida Community College Press Association competition. Included in those honors is a First Place for General Excellence in the Small School Division. The newspaper received seven first places, four second places and one third place. Our literary magazine, Mosaic, also collected three first place awards in Editing, Fiction and Photo, plus two third places. Tom Pierce, advisor, will present the awards and some of the students who received those awards.

SCC Athletics to tee-off for scholarships

On November 5, SCC's basketball, baseball and softball coaches will participate in the Golf Challenge at the Champion's Gate Golf Club in Orlando. A new approach to fundraising, the coaches hope to raise a self-imposed goal of $100,000 for their programs.

Heightened Security/Anthrax Threat

Given world conditions, the College is experiencing incidents that have caused us to increase security and name a Crisis Response Team that will be chaired by Dr. Hank Hurley and will be responsible for reviewing our emergency procedures.

General Budget Sessions

Paul Hull covered the status of the budget cuts from a Tallahassee viewpoint in his legislative update. We will be having budget discussions, open to all college staff, on October 18 to solicit their suggestions concerning absorbing an additional 5% budget reduction this year and a potential 5% reduction next year.
