Presidential Report May 15, 2001Dear Colleagues, What follows below is the President's Report that was submitted to the District Board of Trustees at their meeting this week at Hunt Club. The day after the Board meeting, I learned that one of our Honors students, Jennifer Whittaker, had been selected as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow by the US Department of State. There were 228 applicants; 23 students interviewed in DC; and 10 selected. Jennifer's competition included students from Harvard, Stanford, U of Tulsa, Howard University, etc. She was the only community college student who was interviewed. Her selection as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow provides the funds for the rest of her bachelor's degree and master's degree at the institution of her choice. It also guarantees her foreign service with the US State Department after graduation. Jennifer figures that she is probably $175,000 richer than she was on Monday and Princeton is looking very good. This is an incredible honor for Jennifer, our Honors program, and SCC!!! I know the KEY role that our caring faculty and staff played in Jennifer's success. From a GED student to a Woodrow Wilson Fellow is quite a way for her to travel. Thank you to each one of you who were holding her hand along the way. The caring and concern that happens every day at SCC is truly our STRENGTH!!! Congratulations Success of Honors students who have gone on: Ginine Hanco graduated Magnum Cum Laude from Rollins and Natalie Hundley graduated Cum Laude from Rollins. Both Ginine and Natalie won special awards there. In addition, of the 24 Honors graduates from SCC this year, 22 have been accepted to and will attend four-year colleges. SCC graduate, David Bracewell, Honors Class of 1999, recently published an article in a very prestigious Computer Journal and UCF flew him to Seattle to deliver it. Athletics For the first time in SCC fastpitch history, the Raiders qualified for the State Tournament, held at the Osceola Softball Complex, May 3-5. The Raiders (46-12) and ranked 9th in the Nation. 5 students made the Mid-Florida Conference First Team; 2 made the Florida First Team All-State; 2 made the NCJAA/FCCAA Atlantic District All Tournament Team; and 1 made NJCAA/FCCAA Region VIII All Tournament Team. In attending the playoffs at Osceola, I was not only impressed with our women's team; but also was impressed with the reputation that our students and Courtney Miller have earned as sportswomen. ACCT Conference June 13-16, 2001 in Chicago, IL. Verdell Pugh and Charles English will represent SCC. June Board Workshop and Meeting June 19, at 5:00PM = Workshop Regular Meeting at 7:00PM High Tech Announcement April 20 - This joint IT announcement by Seminole, Valencia and Lake-Sumter has gotten us great local and national publicity. We made it into the national Community College Week publication with a picture that included Governor Bush. Graduations Thank you for attending our graduation ceremonies. 1500 at AHS and Commencement ceremonies. Donna McIntosh was thrilled with the presentation of her "official" degree from SCC.
