2012 Updates

First Wednesday Update: Sept. 5, 2012

Convocation Is Sept. 25

Please mark your calendar. Every Seminole State faculty and staff member is invited to our annual Collegewide Convocation, to be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. All College sites and offices will be closed to students for the entire day and evening. Here is the agenda for the day:

  • 7:30 – 8:15 a.m.: Breakfast buffet in the Gymnasium
  • 8:15 – 9:15 a.m.: Dr. McGee's “State of the College,” Career Service/Pathfinder awards, and other employee recognition
  • 9:30 – 11:40 a.m.: Morning professional development workshops for all employees
  • 11:40 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Box lunches available in the Gymnasium foyer
  • 1:00 – 4:20 p.m.: Afternoon professional development workshops for all employees

Convocation Day Workshops

The workshops held on Convocation afternoon last year were so well-received that they have been expanded to be offered throughout the morning and afternoon this year. Attached is the latest schedule of more than three dozen workshop/presentation opportunities available to all faculty and staff for this year’s “Employee Development Conference.” Please use the Sign-Me-Up Calendar to view the session content and to register for these workshops:

HR will be keeping track of the reservations to ensure there is adequate seating for each presentation, which may require some room changes, which will be communicated prior to Sept. 25. Professional development credit will be awarded to attendees, so please sign the roster of each session you attend. After the day is concluded, an online evaluation of the workshops will be made available to all employees in order to obtain feedback on this year’s “Employee Development Conference.” Many thanks to Gina Fontana of our Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning and to Bill Fowler in Human Resources for arranging these workshops. Also, thank you to the many Seminole State faculty and staff who will offer their time and talents as presenters.

Pathfinder Deadlines This Friday

Only two days are left to submit nominations for our College's 2012 Pathfinder Awards. A $2,000 Pathfinder Award is given annually to recognize one Seminole State employee, and another $2,000 Pathfinder Award is given annually to one Seminole State department that has demonstrated exemplary service to our College over the last year or so. The individual Pathfinder recipient will receive a $2,000 cash award to spend as he or she pleases. Any full-time faculty/staff member employed more than one year may be nominated for this award. The $2,000 awarded to the department receiving the Pathfinder Award may be spent on department equipment or a department activity based upon parameters to be determined by the Seminole State Foundation, which is providing the funds for this award. To nominate an individual or a department for these Pathfinder Awards, please submit the name of the individual or department, together with the reasons for the nomination (in less than 500 words), to Yolanda Williams via email by Friday, Sept. 7, 2012. The 2012 Pathfinder Awards Selection Committee will then meet to select the individual and department to be honored in a surprise announcement during the Collegewide Convocation celebration on Sept. 25.

Sign Up For Emergency Messaging

Last week’s inclement weather associated with Tropical Storm Isaac served as a reminder to sign up for emergency text messaging for weather-related bulletins from our College. Here's how to sign up:

College Advisory Council Recap

On Aug. 21, the College Advisory Council (CAC) met for the monthly exchange of information and ideas between the Executive Team and leaders from the Faculty Senate, the Career Service Employees Council (CSEC), the Professional Employee Council (PEC), the SGA, and other areas of the College. Here is a brief recap of the discussion regarding each agenda item from the August meeting:

  • Enrollment: Information shared; FTE enrollment for Fall 2012 classes is on track to be greater than last year, thanks in large part to continued new enrollments of bachelor’s degree students.
  • Procedure 4.0302 Credit Hour Definition: Information shared; ready to advertise for comments.
  • Other Policies & Procedures: Information shared; comments from CAC members are to be forwarded to Marcia Roman.
  • Pay For Performance Update: Information shared; this year’s recipients will see the awards reflected in their paycheck beginning with the Sept. 28 pay date.
  • Smoke-Free College Discussion: The PEC and CSEC representatives reported that both groups have expressed strong support for exploring the possibility of Seminole State becoming a smoke-free college. Also, Seminole State’s planning of a Wellness Center on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus seems incongruent with continued expenses to upgrade and maintain the many smoking kiosks around the campus. Therefore, the Executive Team plans to meet with the 2012-13 SGA leaders this fall and discuss the smoke-free concept with them. Any transition to a smoke-free college would take place with at least a 6-month notice, and only after a vote from the Board of Trustees authorizing such a move.
