2012 Updates

First Wednesday Update: August 2012

Career Service Awards for 2012
Once again, two of Seminole State's full-time Career Service employees will receive $1,250 awards for excellence, courtesy of the Seminole State Foundation. These two awards will be presented in a surprise announcement during the Collegewide Convocation on Sept. 25. Attached are the nomination form and instructions on how to nominate a Career Service employee for this year's awards. Employees may nominate themselves or another employee. Complete application packages must be submitted to the Foundation for Seminole State Office in room A-204J on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus no later than 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29. Applications will be reviewed by a Career Service Review Committee of the Career Service Employees Council (CSEC), and the final selection will be made by members of the Foundation Board of Directors.

Pathfinder Award Nominations
Nominations are now being accepted for our College's 2012 Pathfinder Awards. A $2,000 Pathfinder Award is given annually to recognize one Seminole State employee, and a $2,000 Pathfinder Award is given annually to one Seminole State department that has demonstrated exemplary service to our College over the last year or so. The individual Pathfinder recipient will receive a $2,000 cash award to spend as he or she pleases. Any full-time faculty/staff member employed more than one year may be nominated for this award. The $2,000 awarded to the department receiving the Pathfinder Award may be spent on department equipment or a department activity based upon parameters to be determined by the Foundation for Seminole State, which is providing the funds for this award. To nominate an individual or a department for these Pathfinder Awards, please submit the name of the individual or department, together with the reasons for the nomination (in less than 500 words), to Yolanda Williams via email by Friday, Sept. 7. The 2012 Pathfinder Awards Selection Committee will then meet to select the individual and department to be honored in a surprise announcement during the Collegewide Convocation celebration on Sept. 25.

Share Your Accomplishments

During the Collegewide Convocation on Sept. 25, a printed program will be distributed containing a section called "Applause! Applause!" This section recognizes employees for their accomplishments and successes over the past year or so. All Seminole State employees, including part-time staff and adjunct instructors, are invited to contribute their accomplishments. To submit your accomplishment(s) for this year's edition, please complete the online form and submit your information by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22. (Please note: Your submission may be edited for length.)

New Parking Permit for Faculty/Staff

Since our current faculty/staff parking permits expire Aug. 31, all employees will need to obtain new parking hang tags by the end of August. To make this replacement process more convenient for employees working this summer, our Safety and Security Department has scheduled a series of opportunities at all campus locations for employees to obtain new hanging tags. In order to obtain your new permit, please bring your Seminole State employee ID number and your vehicle’s license plate number to the following:

Altamonte Springs: Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2 – 6 p.m., Security Office

Heathrow: Thursday, Aug. 16, 2 – 6 p.m., Security Office Front Desk

Oviedo: Thursday, Aug. 16, 2 – 6 p.m., OVF-104

Sanford/Lake Mary: Thursday, Aug. 16, 2 – 6 p.m., breezeway between building L and building S

Please Note: For those faculty who are off-campus during early August, our Safety & Security Department will also be on hand during the Academic Affairs’ Welcome Back gathering on Aug. 22to expedite your new parking permit process.

“Point The Way” Volunteers Needed

Employees are invited and encouraged to help new students during the first several day of Fall classes by volunteering for "Point the Way" at the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. Volunteers will be needed to staff tables on Monday, Aug. 27, and Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in one-hour intervals. There will be three locations. To sign up, simply visit the Sign Me Up Calendar, sign in, then choose “August” and “Point the Way” on the drop down menus. You can choose any one of three locations on the Campus based upon your schedule and availability. Thank you in advance for meeting and greeting new students and giving them helpful information as they begin their semester at Seminole State College. Also, if anyone is interested in volunteering for evening classes, please contact Debbie Rush at ext. 2763.

College Advisory Council Recap

On July 17, the College Advisory Council (CAC) met for the monthly exchange of information and ideas between the Executive Team and leaders from the Faculty Senate, the CSEC, the PEC, the SGA, and other areas of the College. Here is a brief recap of the discussion regarding each agenda item from the July meeting:

  • Employee Parking Permits: Information shared; please see above.
  • Enrollment: Information shared; preliminary numbers for Fall 2012 are encouraging, thanks in large part to new bachelor’s degree students enrolling for their first Fall Term, but we expect more comparable numbers after we are in open registration.
  • Pay for Performance Program: All decisions have been made and approved by the Executive Team. Forms are being returned for Mid-Year Evaluations to be discussed with all eligible employees.
  • VPAA Search: Information shared; open forums scheduled with the four final candidates.
  • Credit Hours Policy: Information shared; the procedure will come back to a future CAC meeting.
  • Sanford/Lake Mary Library Hours: Information shared; the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus Library is extending its hours of operation to include Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. as well as Sundays from 1 - 6 p.m. There is also discussion about possibly expanding the hours of operation during exam weeks based on faculty and student feedback.
