Budget Forums

Joe Sarnovsky is hosting a series of budget forums for faculty and staff next week. Each forum will begin with a 15-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute Q&A opportunity for open discussion about the budget framework guiding the development of the 2012-13 operating budget for Seminole State. The forums are scheduled for:

Endowed Teaching Chairs

Please congratulate the eight faculty finalists for the 2012 Endowed Teaching Chair Awards, announced today by the Foundation for Seminole State College of Florida.  They include:

  • Dr. Jordan Camenker, legal studies professor, Department of Business and Legal Studies
  • Ms. Dianna Campbell, music professor, Department of Arts and Communications
  • Ms. Laura Dickinson, communications professor, Department of Arts and Communications
  • Ms. Karen Feldman, English professor, Department of English
  • Mr. Samuel Gaustad, humanities professor, Department of Humanities
  • Ms. Carol Perezluha, college prep math professor, Department of Mathematics
  • Ms. Bonnie Tensen, English professor, Department of English
  • Ms. Terri Walsh, business administration professor/program manager, Department of Business and Legal Studies

Endowed Teaching Chair Awards recognize some of Seminole State's most outstanding educators for their invaluable contributions to the College. Applicants are nominated by their peers and screened by a committee of faculty and staff volunteers. On April 20, members of the Foundation Board of Directors will interview the finalists and select the winners. Four Seminole State College faculty members will then be honored with $5,000 Endowed Teaching Chair Awards during the College's Spring 2012 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, April 27. As was established during last year’s awards, runners-up will each receive a $500 Faculty Excellence Award.

Mini-Grants Spring Awards – Applications Requested

All full-time College faculty and staff are invited to apply for the Foundation of Seminole State College’s annual Mini-Grant Program. The maximum award for an individual grant is $2,000. Grants are awarded by a committee composed of members of the Foundation Board of Directors. The deadline for grant submission is 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 10. You may view the information to apply for the Spring 2012 Mini-Grant Awards by clicking here. NOTE: The application form has changed. Seminole State Designated “Fit-Friendly”

The American Heart Association (AHA) has named Seminole State as a Gold Level Recipient of its “Fit-Friendly Companies” recognition program for the opportunities the College “provides to employees on a regular basis to lead to a healthy lifestyle.” This AHA designation means the association recognizes Seminole State for offering employees physical activity support, promoting a wellness culture, and implementing at least nine criteria as outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture.

College Advisory Council Recap

On March 20, the College Advisory Council (CAC) met for the monthly exchange of information and ideas between the Executive Team and leaders from the Faculty Senate, the CSEC, the PEC, the SGA and other areas of the College. Here is a brief recap of the discussion regarding each agenda item from the March meeting:

  • Legislative Update: Information shared regarding the Legislature’s budget, which will next be sent to the Governor, who will then have two weeks to review and issue his responses.
  • 2012-13 Budget Update: Information shared about the collegewide budget forums, which will be scheduled March 30-April 12.
  • Enrollment Update: Information shared regarding the enrollment for the Spring Term, which remains flat. Summer Term enrollment has begun.
  • FRS/Retirement: The 2012 Legislature passed several bills affecting the Florida Retirement System, which are awaiting the governor’s signature. These changes are outlined here.
  • United Way Campaign: Information shared regarding the campaign, which will run through the end of March. Employee participation is already rising. When combining the results of the recent Blue & Gold Circle campaign, the Leadership Academy’s “Feed the Need” project and the current United Way campaign, approximately 47 percent of Seminole State employees are now contributing to help those in need.
  • Revised Student Code of Conduct: Comment period and revisions are under way. While the revisions are under review, the College is moving forward with a new pilot program.
  • Kaleidoscope Activities: Information shared about a wide variety of March-April activities currently under way.

Spring Graduation Ceremonies

Graduation ceremonies will take place at the end of April on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. The annual Adult High School and GED graduations will be combined and held Thursday, April 26, at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. The following evening, on Friday, April 27, college-credit graduation will be held at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. The PTA graduation ceremony will be held Monday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the Concert Hall.
