First Wednesday Update: May 4, 2011Summer HoursNext week, the College will begin the summer four-day class and work weeks. Complete details on work-week schedules at Seminole State during the summer months are available at http://www.seminolestate.edu/newsroom/articles/400/Summer-hours-start-the-week-of-May-9. Five-day work weeks will resume in August. Summer EnrollmentWith the Summer Term beginning next Monday, it appears that the College will end up below our targeted enrollment projections. As of this morning, Total Credit FTE enrollment for Summer is up 4.8 percent over last year, which — although still an increase over Summer 2010 — is below our targeted projection of +10 percent and tells us that enrollment is continuing to slow down. Last year at this time, we were experiencing double-digit enrollment increases over the previous year. Now, we are seeing lower single digits in year-to-year comparisons. We're hearing that other colleges throughout our system are experiencing similar declines. Endowed Teaching ChairsFour Seminole State faculty have been awarded Endowed Teaching Chairs. Congratulations to Dr. Michael Artiaga, Professor Paul Luby, Dr. Maudrilla (Marge) Thompson and Professor James Turner, who have distinguished themselves with their excellence in teaching. They were recognized during last Friday's Spring Commencement Ceremony and are each receiving a $5,000 Endowed Teaching Chair Award from the Foundation for Seminole State College. Also, congratulations to four other faculty finalists who are receiving a $500 Faculty Excellence Award: Dr. Jordan Camenker, Professor Sam Gaustad, Professor Carol Perezluha and Professor Bonnie Tensen. All eight of these faculty members will be invited to represent the College at next year's National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Faculty Excellence Conference in Austin. Foundation Mini-Grant Application Deadline This FridayAll full-time faculty and staff are invited to apply for the annual Mini-Grant Program of the Foundation for Seminole State College. The maximum award for an individual grant is $2,000. Grants are awarded by a committee composed of members of the Presidents' Club Advisory Council and Board of Directors of the Foundation. The deadline for grant submission is 4 p.m. this Friday, May 6. Attached is the information to apply for a Spring 2011 Mini-Grant Award. For additional information, please contact the Foundation at 407.708.2429. Budget Discussions Next WeekBudget discussions will be held next week at each campus. Sanford/Lake Mary Office RelocationsState funding for a new Student Center on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus is now on hold for at least several more years, making it necessary for us to develop a 3-5-year strategy to better serve students. Therefore, the College is looking at a new plan to expand student services capabilities on campus. The new plan will begin with utilizing the second floor of building L once construction of the top floor is completed later this summer. The intent is to move HR and the Business Office functions — other than the Cashiers — out of the lower floor of the Weldon Building and into the L building space where the library used to be. This will free up the lower level of the Weldon Building to accommodate Student Affairs services such as Financial Aid, Disability Support Services, etc. A specific plan is just beginning to be formulated. Please look for more information later in May and in June. Leadership Academy Information SessionsApplications are being accepted for the 2011-12 Leadership Academy, comprised of 20-25 faculty and staff members who will participate in seven all-day leadership development sessions from September 2011 through March 2012. The 2011-12 application form and fact sheets are attached. Applications will be accepted through June 1, and the next class should be announced by the end of Term IIIA. To learn more about the Leadership Academy or to speak with alumni of the program about their experience, please attend one of the following information sessions scheduled this month:
