2010 Updates

First Wednesday Update: Aug. 4, 2010

Resumption of 5-Day Work Week

This week, the College has returned to the 5-day work week. The regular work-week for full-time personnel is 37.5 hours, Monday through Friday. The regular work-day is 7.5 hours with a 60-minute lunch period. Most college offices will be open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Service hours may vary in some areas. If you have any questions, please confirm your work schedule with your supervisor.

Students' MyMail System Changing Next Week

Due to current system and feature limitations, next week our students' current e-mail system -- MyMail -- will change over to an improved e-mail system called Live Mail which is powered and hosted by Microsoft. LiveMail will give students expanded mailbox space, synchronization with their smart phones, social networking tools and the ability to keep their email address for personal use after they graduate from Seminole State. Returning students will still be able to access their previous MyMail account but only on an archive ("read-only") basis ... they will only be able to send or receive new emails on the new "LiveMail" system. For a period of time this Fall Term, students clicking on the Live Mail button at the top of our home page will be directed to a landing page with links to both the new Live Mail system and any archived messages in their My Mail archives. All student e-mail addresses will be automatically updated on class rosters and Sakai. If you have any questions about Live Mail, please contact the Help Desk at ext. 2000.

Construction on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus

Major renovations to the L Building will begin this fall on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus to improve the exterior, walkways, staircases, elevators, and interior 3rd floor of the building. Almost 30 additional classrooms will be equipped with the latest standards in classroom technology, electrical power, lighting, finishes, and furnishings. The project is scheduled for tentative completion for Fall Term 2011.

This renovation will also require changes in access to the L Building. Fence installation around the building is scheduled to begin on Aug. 9 and should be completed by Aug. 23. By the first day of the Fall Term, the contractor will set staging areas, determine access routes, and change pedestrian patterns so students, faculty, and staff can move safely throughout the campus. Attached are the electronic maps for each floor of the L Building showing where construction fences or barriers will be erected. Also, briefings to Educational Programs division constituents are scheduled on August 18 after the general "Welcome Back" session. In the meantime, please contact Donna Duncan at duncand@seminolestate.edu or John Ebling at eblingj@seminolestate.edu if you would like additional information sessions on this issue.

Career Service Awards for 2010

Once again, two of Seminole State's full-time Career Service employees will receive $1,250 awards for excellence, courtesy of the Seminole State Foundation. These two awards will be presented in a surprise announcement during the Collegewide Convocation on Sept. 28. Attached are the nomination form and instructions on how to nominate a Career Service employee for this year's awards. Employees may nominate themselves or another employee. Complete application packages must be submitted to the Foundation Office, Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, Room A204J, no later than 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010. Applications will be reviewed by a Career Service Review Committee of the CPEC and the final selection will be made by members of the Foundation Board of Directors.

Pathfinder Award Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for our College's 2010 Pathfinder Awards -- a $2,000 Pathfinder Award is given annually to recognize one Seminole State employee, and a $2,000 Pathfinder Award is given annually to one Seminole State department that has demonstrated exemplary service to our College over the last year or so. The individual Pathfinder recipient will receive a $2,000 cash award (less applicable taxes) ... to spend as he or she pleases. Any full-time faculty/staff member employed over one year may be nominated for this award. The $2,000 awarded to the department receiving the Pathfinder Award may be spent on department equipment or a department activity based upon parameters to be determined by the Seminole State Foundation, which is providing the funds for this award. To nominate an individual or a department for these Pathfinder Awards, please submit the name of the individual or department, together with the reasons for the nomination (in less than 500 words), to Yolanda Williams via email by Friday, Sept. 3. The 2010 Pathfinder Awards Selection Committee will then meet to select the individual and department to be honored in a surprise announcement during the Collegewide Convocation celebration on Sept. 28.

Share Your Accomplishments

During the Collegewide Convocation on Sept. 28, a printed program will be distributed containing a section called "Applause! Applause!" This section recognizes employees for their accomplishments and successes over the past year or so. All Seminole State employees, including part-time staff and adjunct instructors, are invited to contribute their accomplishments. To submit your accomplishment(s) for this year's edition, please visit http://www.seminolestate.edu/crm/applause_submit.php, complete the online form and submit your information by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25. (Please note: Your submission may be edited for length.)
