2009 Updates

First Wednesday Update: September 2, 2009

Name Change

The submission period for suggesting a new name for our College ended at midnight last night and now our Institutional Research department is busy tabulating all responses. This Friday, our Name Review Committee will meet to examine all names submitted, and to begin tackling the task of narrowing all of the suggestions down to approximately 10 names. Then, next week the Committee will seek feedback on the 10 names from SCC students, from SCPS students, from community constituents, and from you. Please look for an email early Tuesday morning (after this holiday weekend) that will communicate how you can go to an online survey for SCC faculty / staff in order to express your preference regarding the list of 10 potential new names for our institution. The Committee then will review all feedback and conclude their task by making a recommendation for three final name suggestions to the Executive Team. Our District Board of Trustees is scheduled to consider a new name selection at their September 21 meeting.

Fall Enrollment

Two weeks into the Fall Term, we are up +22% in college credit enrollment compared to last Fall, and we have significantly exceeded all targeted projections. Thank you to everyone for working so hard to help achieve these enrollment gains! This continued growth in our enrollment certainly conveys how much our community needs us.

New "Center For Public Safety"

Our new "Center For Public Safety" is now open on the Sanford / Lake Mary Campus. This 59,000 sq. ft. facility brings together our Criminal Justice program, our Fire Science program, and our Emergency Medical Services program all under one roof. The new Center includes smart classrooms and state-of-the-art simulation labs, and is enabling us to enhance each of these public service programs which are so important to our community. Plus, students from other areas of the College are also being served, as we utilize the many new classrooms now available in the facility throughout the day and evening. To create the $17.6 million Center, the former I Building and K Building were completely renovated, and a new administrative wing was added to connect them. If you have not done so, please stop by and check out this important addition to our Sanford / Lake Mary Campus.

SACS

Thank you to the many SCC constituents who are working with our SACS Core Team to prepare all of the documentation required for the SACS 5th Year Review report due this fall and for the Level II site visit that will take place in 2010. These SACS endeavors are critically important for our institution, so please continue to be very responsive to any requests associated with them.

H1N1 Precautions

As you know from news reports, the H1N1 flu continues to be a concern at all educational institutions, especially as we approach the nationwide flu season this fall. Locally, SCC and Seminole County's Emergency Operations Center are in constant communication regarding this issue, and our College is following the direction of Seminole County's Department of Health. Also, our SCC Emergency Response Team is finalizing a draft of procedures and action plans that would address potential risk factors related to H1N1 and other communicable diseases. In the meantime, all SCC faculty, staff, and students are advised to follow the attached Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for hand washing and proper ways to minimize spread of the H1N1 flu. Stickers have been placed in many of the restrooms on our Altamonte, Heathrow, and Oviedo campuses with Sanford / Lake Mary installations to be completed later this month. These stickers describe and recommend proper hand washing techniques. Also, a CDC video regarding the practice of good hand washing -- and other safety recommendations -- is being played on large television screens several times per day at all sites.
