2009 Updates

First Wednesday Update: Aug. 5, 2009

Name Change

Earlier this week, we officially announced to our Central Florida community that we are beginning a process to change our name. We also are keenly interested in receiving your name suggestion ideas. Now, through September 1, you are invited to submit any name ideas you have via our website at http://www.seminolestate.edu/namechange/. Then, after September 1st, our “Name Review Committee” will examine all of the names submitted and narrow them to a list of potential names that will again be circulated for feedback and reaction. Remember, this committee includes one of our SGA Presidents, 5 full-time and adjunct faculty, 4 community members, and other representatives from among our Career Service, Professional, and Administrative employees. All of their names and connections to SCC are listed on the website. By September 15, the Committee will forward a final recommendation to the Executive Team. Our District Board of Trustees will consider a new name selection at their September 21 meeting.

Career Service Awards for 2009

Once again, two of SCC's full-time Career Service employees will receive $1,250 awards for excellence, courtesy of the SCC Foundation. These two awards will be presented in a surprise announcement during the Collegewide Convocation on September 29, 2009. Attached are the nomination form and instructions on how to nominate an SCC Career Service employee for this year's awards. Employees may nominate themselves or another employee. Complete application packages must be submitted to the Foundation Office, Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, Room A204J, no later than 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2009. Applications will be reviewed by a Career Service Review Committee of the CPEC and the final selection will be made by members of the Foundation Board of Directors.

Pathfinder Award Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for our College's 2009 Pathfinder Awards -- a $2,000 Pathfinder Award is given annually to recognize one SCC employee, and a $2,000 Pathfinder Award is given annually to one SCC department that has demonstrated exemplary service to our College over the last year or so. The individual Pathfinder recipient will receive a $2,000 cash award (less applicable taxes) ... to spend as he or she pleases. Any full-time SCC faculty / staff member employed over one year may be nominated for this award. The $2,000 awarded to the department receiving the Pathfinder Award may be spent on department equipment or a department activity based upon parameters to be determined by the SCC Foundation, which is providing the funds for this award. To nominate an individual or a department for these Pathfinder Awards, please submit the name of the individual or department, together with the reasons for the nomination (in less than 500 words), to Yolanda Williams via email by Friday, Sept. 4, 2009. The 2009 Pathfinder Awards Selection Committee will then meet to select the individual and department to be honored in a surprise announcement during the Collegewide Convocation celebration on September 29th.

Resumption of 5-Day Work Week

This week, the College has returned to the 5-day work week. The regular work-week for full-time personnel is 37.5 hours, Monday through Friday. The regular work-day is 7.5 hours with a 60-minute lunch period. Most college offices will be open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Service hours may vary in some areas. If you have any questions, please confirm your work schedule with your supervisor.

Sanford / Lake Mary Campus Parking

Parking lot construction and repairs throughout the Sanford / Lake Mary Campus are proceeding on schedule to greatly improve and expand space available for students, faculty, and staff this fall. Attached, you will find an overview of the parking lot changes to be implemented as the Fall Term begins. These include:

  1. The results of the faculty / staff parking survey and forums held this past spring and summer will be implemented. Parking Option #2 was preferred by a vast majority of those responding to the survey and the Executive Team approved that distribution concept on June 1. Therefore, we will have almost 700 spaces designated for faculty and staff use on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus this Fall. More spaces will be designated for faculty / staff use in the Spring Term as described in Option #2 once the final lots are completed.
  2. The lots and spaces designated for use by faculty / staff will be monitored by our security officers to assure proper use. An assessment will be performed next summer to determine if parking fines are necessary to maintain proper use of those spaces.
  3. In order to maintain traffic safety and improve accessibility, parking on the grass (other than where designated) will be prohibited so we can restore green space and add landscaping on the campus. Violators will be towed.
  4. Directional signage will be erected on roadways to help traffic navigate to proper parking areas.

Completion of the new loop roadway, the new roundabout, and the lot between the Student Success Services building and the University Partnership Center remains scheduled for Spring Term. An updated map will be provided at that time. Thanks to everyone for your ongoing patience and understanding throughout this process.

Executive AA Degree

Dean Annye Refoe and Dean Michael Staley will conduct an informational session about the new "Executive AA" program that will begin this Fall Term at our Heathrow Center. Any SCC employee interested in earning an AA degree while attending classes on week nights after work is invited to attend this informational session to be held this Friday, August 7, at 1:30 p.m. in Room 138 at Heathrow.

Share Your Accomplishments

During the September 29 Collegewide Convocation, a printed program will be distributed containing a section called "Applause! Applause!" This section recognizes employees for their accomplishments and successes over the past year or so. ALL SCC employees, including part-time staff and adjunct instructors, are invited to contribute their accomplishments. To submit your accomplishment(s) for this year's edition, please visit http://www.seminolestate.edu/crm/applause_submit.php, complete the online form and submit your information by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Please note: Your submission may be edited for length.

SCC Board of Trustees

At their July 20 meeting, SCC's District Board of Trustees elected Lisa Greer as Chairman, and Scott Howat as Vice-Chair. On July 31st, we received word from the Governor's Appointments Office that Cindy Drago has been appointed to the District Board of Trustees for a four-year term (2009-2013). She is assuming the position that has been held for the past ten years by Dede Schaffner. Please join us in thanking Dede Schaffner for her longtime service on our Board and in welcoming Cindy Drago to her new position.
