2009 Updates

First Wednesday Update: April 1, 2009

Federal Withholding Changes in April 30 Paychecks

As part of the U.S. government's "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009," be aware that the IRS will be changing federal withholding on many employees' paychecks, beginning with the April 30 paycheck. For your convenience, SCC's Payroll Services Department has developed a guide on the Making Work Pay Tax Credit. Some employees may need to make adjustments to their federal tax withholding amounts by submitting a new Form W-4: Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate to avoid any surprises when filing future tax returns.

Parking at the Altamonte Springs Campus

The new parking lot for students at our Altamonte Springs Campus will officially open for use on Monday, April 13. With the opening of this new lot, some "No Parking" signs and yellow curbs have been placed throughout the existing parking lots, primarily at the paved ends of each row of parking.

With the new lot opening and the posted no parking designations, the Altamonte Springs Police Department is beginning to enforce regulations by issuing tickets. Also, there have been a number of accidents in the last several months in which illegally parked cars have been hit by other cars trying to pull out of legitimate parking spaces, causing damage to both cars. By enforcing the no parking zones, the Altamonte Springs Campus' parking lots should be safer and more accessible for emergency vehicles.

Annual Retiree Celebration

The eight SCC faculty and staff members who have retired since last April's Retiree Celebration will be honored from 3:30 - 4 p.m. on Friday, April 24, in the SCC Theatre, followed by a reception, from 4 - 4:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts lobby. This year's retirees include Diana Dillon, Sharon Fear, Curtis Hague, Marilyn Hawkins, Minnie Johnson, Joan Melco, Mary Taylor and Richard Young.

SCC Student to Be Featured in USA Today on April 6

SCC student Trishelle Copeland-Johnson has been named the top honors student in Florida and will be recognized in Phoenix, Az., at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention, where she will be named both a New Century Scholar and a member of the USA Today First Academic Team. Be sure to get the April 6 issue of USA Today because Trishelle will be featured, along with the other 49 top community college students in the nation.

Trishelle is the first SCC student to receive this award. Congratulations to Trishelle and to all of the SCC faculty and staff members who have helped her.

New Method for Financial Aid Reimbursement to Students

SCC will implement a new method for disbursing financial aid refunds to students, beginning with the Summer 2009 refund distributions in May. From now on, students can choose to have their financial aid refunds delivered electronically to an "SCC OneCard" debit card, which can then be used at special ATM locations on SCC sites. All students who are enrolled during the Spring 2009 term, who were issued a financial aid refund, will be mailed one of these cards in April with instructions on how to  activate and use it. Student questions on the new SCC OneCard or financial aid refunds should be directed to SCC's Financial Aid Department.
