2008 Updates

First Wednesday Update: Sept. 3, 2008

Drug-Free Awareness Programs

SCC's Human Resources Department has developed new educational training programs that all SCC employees are required to take this fall: a "Drug-Free Awareness for Employees Program," for all SCC employees, and a "Drug-Free Awareness for Supervisors Program" for all SCC supervisors (any employee who has one or more reporting staff members). Both of these self-paced, online information programs are available from the Learning Connection and can be accessed from your workplace PC.

In accordance with the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, these awareness programs provide information about our Drug-Free Workplace Policy (2.100), the dangers of drug abuse in the workplace, available assistance and the penalties of violations in the workplace. Every SCC employee is required to read the awareness program and complete an online acknowledgment form by the end of this year (Dec. 31, 2008). Supervisors are to make arrangements for their staff members to complete this program. Review the attached document, which contains specific directions on how to log into and complete the program(s).

Pathfinder Award Nominations

This Friday is the deadline for submitting nominations for the 2008 SCC Pathfinder Awards. One individual Pathfinder recipient will receive a $2,000 cash award (minus taxes) to spend as he or she pleases. Any SCC employee who has been employed for more than one year may be nominated for this award. One SCC department will be awarded $2,000--to be spent on department equipment or a department activity, based on parameters determined by the SCC Foundation, which is providing the funds for this award. To nominate an individual or a department for these awards, submit the name of the individual or department, together with the reasons for the nomination (in less than 500 words), to Yolanda Williams via e-mail. The 2008 Pathfinder Awards Selection Committee will then meet to select the individual and department to be honored in a surprise announcement during the Collegewide Convocation celebration on October 7.

SCC Employee Survey

This fall, we are beginning the process of updating our 2005-10 Strategic Plan by looking ahead and charting SCC's long-term course, with the development of a new 2010-15 Strategic Plan. Your input is a vital ingredient in this process. Please take a few moments to complete a brief, six-question online survey about how you think SCC is doing and what you feel are the important trends and initiatives SCC should be addressing in the years ahead.  Click this link (http://www.seminolestate.edu/ir/strategicplan/facultystaff.php), log in with your MySCC user name and password, and share your opinions between now and September 12. All responses will be kept anonymous, so please be candid. We are also asking SCC students this week to participate in a similar online survey, to learn students' opinions about SCC and our future plans. Then, later this autumn, members of SCC's faculty and staff will have the opportunity to participate in a series of SCC employee focus groups, where they can express additional ideas and opinions about where SCC should be headed. Details about these upcoming SCC employee focus groups will be included in next month's First Wednesday Update.

Furniture Standards for the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus

Next week, all Sanford/Lake Mary Campus faculty and staff members will have the opportunity to provide input on future furniture standards for the Campus. Due to the varying architectural styles of existing Sanford/Lake Mary Campus buildings, the SCC Facilities Department is seeking the input of our faculty and staff before choosing from a group of three design options to use as campuswide standards for furniture selection when its new and renovated buildings are completed. All SCC faculty and staff members are invited to review the furniture designs and provide feedback next Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 9 - 11, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room in Building C. There will be multiple furniture mockup displays, featuring faculty office setup, desk seating, filing/storage, classroom table, and classroom and computer lab seating options. Come take advantage of this opportunity to view the furniture samples and provide input regarding your preferences.

2008-09  Unit Plans

With the help of a consultant, SCC's Quality Service Taskforce has reviewed all annual plans that were input into Plan-It EZ earlier this year. This week, the feedback from these reviews are being sent to all budget managers. Any plan that requires a requested revision from the Quality Service Taskforce must be resubmitted to Plan-It EZ by October 13. For those who have questions about, need clarification on or need help in adjusting your plans, the Taskforce will offer a coaching session on September 10 from 9 - 11 a.m. in room J-100 on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. Many thanks to the Quality Service Taskforce: Christine Robinson, Jan Gerrity, Matthew Christo, Patricia DeSalvo, Karoline Ellis, Cindy Krakosky, Lisa Massing, Marcia Roman, Claudia Salvano, Travis Spaulding and Molly Yanni.

SCC Now on YouTube

To better market SCC's academics, student activities and opportunities to our 21st century constituents, four videos starring SCC students are now posted on YouTube. These videos are also prominently featured on SCC's new Future Students area of the SCC website and were produced entirely in-house by SCC's College Relations and Marketing, Computing and Telecommunication Services and Multimedia Technology Services departments. Feedback from prospective and current students regarding these videos has been positive. If you haven't already viewed them, find them on YouTube here.

Follett Clarifies SCC Employee Discounts

SCC's on-site bookstore operations are owned and managed by the Follett Higher Education Group. During a recent software upgrade and uploading of standard purchasing discounts, Follett discovered that SCC bookstores have been mistakenly discounting textbooks purchased by SCC employees, which violates Follett's policy and the College's contract. Therefore, Follett management instructed the SCC Bookstores to adhere to the authorized discounts set up in the software. The authorized discount for SCC faculty and staff is 10% on all purchases, excluding textbooks, already-discounted merchandise and academically discounted software.
