First Wednesday Update: Oct. 1 2008

Collegewide Convocation Next Tuesday

Every SCC faculty and staff member is invited to SCC's annual Collegewide Convocation, which will be held next Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus' gymnasium. All SCC sites and offices will be closed that day until 12:30 p.m., so all employees can attend the Convocation. The agenda for Oct. 7 includes:

  • 8 a.m.: Continental breakfast
  • 9 a.m.: SCC Update/Awards and Recognition Program
  • 9:45 a.m.: Nationally recognized speaker, Dr. Kay McClenney, director of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement. Dr. McClenney's topic will be on "What We Have Learned about What Matters for Helping Community College Students Succeed."
  • 11:30 a.m.: Barbecue buffet Employee Appreciation Luncheon, served in the gymnasium foyer with lunch seating inside the gymnasium.
  • 1 - 4 p.m.: Faculty Retreat in the gymnasium
  • 1 - 4:30 p.m.: Student Success Services Retreat in the Multipurpose Room

Endowed Teaching Chair Nominations

SCC Employee Online Survey

As the College continues developing a new 2010-15 Strategic Plan, your input is needed. If you have not already done so, please take a few moments to complete a brief, six-question online survey about how you think SCC is doing and what you feel are the important trends and initiatives SCC should be addressing in the years ahead. lease take a few moments to complete a brief, six-question online survey about how you think SCC is doing and what you feel are the important trends and initiatives SCC should be addressing in the years ahead.  Simply click this link (http://www.seminolestate.edu/ir/strategicplan/facultystaff.php), log in with your MySCC user name and password, and share your opinions. All responses will be kept anonymous, so please be candid. Faculty and staff access to this anonymous survey has been extended through Friday, Oct. 10, to enable as many employees as possible to participate. Also, several future focus groups are in the process of being scheduled for members of our faculty and staff later this month and next. Look for communication soon, regarding the scheduling of these focus groups.

Amendment 8

One of the amendments on the Nov. 4 ballot pertains to Florida's 28 community colleges. Amendment 8, if approved by Florida's voters, would give any community college the future ability to approach the voters in its service area with a proposal to approve a local sales tax increment for a five-year period. Such a future approval from local voters would give a community college additional local revenue that could be used either for college facilities (new or modernized classrooms, buildings, etc.) or for college operating expenses, such as expanded program offerings, additional faculty and more. Seminole Community College currently has no plans to seek such a local sales tax increment, and our Board of Trustees has not discussed doing so. In September, our Board did vote to generally support Amendment 8, believing this amendment has merit. These facts explain Amendment 8 and our Board's reasoning for supporting it. Please consider these facts carefully in arriving at your decision regarding Amendment 8.
