Amendment 8One of the amendments on the Nov. 4 ballot pertains to Florida's 28 community colleges. Amendment 8, if approved by Florida's voters, would give any community college the future ability to approach the voters in its service area with a proposal to approve a local sales tax increment for a five-year period. Such a future approval from local voters would give a community college additional local revenue that could be used either for college facilities (new or modernized classrooms, buildings, etc.) or for college operating expenses, such as expanded program offerings, additional faculty and more. Seminole Community College currently has no plans to seek such a local sales tax increment, and our Board of Trustees has not discussed doing so. In September, our Board did vote to generally support Amendment 8, believing this amendment has merit. These facts explain Amendment 8 and our Board's reasoning for supporting it. Please consider these facts carefully in arriving at your decision regarding Amendment 8. |
