First Wednesday Update: Nov. 5, 2008SCC Foundation Mini-GrantsAll full-time SCC faculty and staff members are invited to apply for the SCC Foundation's annual Mini-Grant Program. This year, the Foundation will award $20,000 in mini-grants this fall and $20,000 next spring. The maximum award for an individual grant is $2,000. Grants are awarded by a committee composed of members of the Presidents' Club Advisory Council from the SCC Foundation. The deadline for grant submission is 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14. For additional information, call the SCC Foundation at 407.708.2382. Drug-Free Awareness ProgramsThis fall, all SCC employees are required to take a "Drug-Free Awareness for Employees Program," and all SCC supervisors (any employee with directly reporting staff members) are also required to complete the "Drug-Free Awareness for Supervisors Program." These self-paced online information programs are available from the Learning Connection and can be accessed from your workplace PC. Every SCC employee is required to read the awareness program and complete an online acknowledgment form by Dec. 31, 2008. Supervisors must make arrangements for their staff members to complete this program. Phone System UpgradeInstallation of a new phone system on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus has begun. Over the next several weeks, members of the Computing and Telecommunication Services Department will visit each office area to remove old phones and replace them with a new multi-line speaker/display phone. E-mails will be sent out approximately one week before the installations are scheduled to occur for each area. SCC employees' phone number will not change; however employees’ former voicemail in-boxes will be unavailable after the changeover, so old messages in the current system will not be carried over to the new system. The upgrade is expected to be completed by Dec. 19, 2008, when all SCC sites will finally share the same phone system. As an additional benefit, a new phone also will be installed in each classroom on the Sanford/Lake Mary and Oviedo Campuses for emergency use and as part of an emergency broadcast system to support the entire College. Service Excellence ProgramA new Service Excellence Program has begun in the Student Success Services Department that will eventually be expanded to all other non-instructional areas of the College. The intent of this program is to ensure that the educational quality that SCC is famous for is also reflected outside the classroom, throughout the College. A cross-college team has already met to articulate our SCC service philosophy, "We change lives by empowering, inspiring and educating our students and community." The team identified four service standards to support the philosophy:
The Student Success Services Team is participating in a comprehensive workshop training process that will be completed by Dec. 15, 2008. The next steps for this program will be announced after the new year begins. Diversity Matters Training ProgramSCC has developed a new, required diversity training program called "Diversity Matters," a single two-hour session that is designed to pave the way toward open communication by initiating conversation and influencing behavior. The Executive Team has just participated in a session, facilitated by Barbara Lott and Marilyn Hawkins. Starting this month, full- and regular part-time SCC employees will begin to receive personal invitations to participate in an upcoming Diversity Matters training session. Check your mail for your personal invitation, which contains specific details on your session in the weeks and months ahead. E Building RenovationThe E Building renovation on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus is on-schedule for final completion in early January. New carpet, floor tile, ceilings and air systems have been installed, and the lighting and electrical trim work was recently completed. Faculty and staff members can expect to begin moving back into the new facility in the spring. Specific relocation plans and timelines are being developed. |
