2008 Updates

First Wednesday Update: May 7, 2008

Legislative Update

The Legislature has approved and sent to Governor Crist a budget for 2008-09 that reduces overall funding for Florida's community colleges. SCC's state funding is down approximately four percent from last year. This budget also permits a six percent tuition increase. We are awaiting the Governor's signature on the proposed budget.

Summer Hours

This week, the College began the summer four-day class and work weeks. Please refer to the attached document for work schedule guidelines and specific hours of operation for various areas of the College. Five-day work weeks will resume in August.

Weldon Blvd. Closed

The 800-foot portion of Weldon Blvd. directly in front of the Gym closed permanently last Friday. The road closed on May 2 because we gave that date some weeks ago to emergency authorities, so they could change fire/police/ambulance routes. The actual demolition of the road and A Building parking lot will commence later in May or June. Until then, the A Building parking lot for faculty/staff and visitors will remain open. Please visit the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus' Web page for ongoing construction updates.

SCC-UCF University Partnership Center Groundbreaking

All SCC employees are invited to attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony for our new SCC-UCF University Partnership Center on the Sanford / Lake Mary Campus, on Wednesday morning, May 21, 2008. The ceremony will be held from 9-10 a.m. on the portion of Weldon Blvd. that has been closed - the actual site of the new four-story building. If your schedule permits, please stop by and witness an important moment in SCC's history.

Divisional Redesign of Student Success Services

A reorganization plan for SCC's Student Success Services (SSS) Division has been approved by the Executive Team and will be implemented July 1, 2008. This reorganization is based on best practices of and site visits to other multi-campus community colleges, as well as SCC student feedback and an array of student success research conducted over the past two years. This plan also reduces the SSS administration by one FTE and saves money. Our SSS leadership team is in the process of meeting with all of the organization's constituents to acquaint them with the new organizational structure. Once these meetings are complete, Jim Henningsen will communicate all of the particulars collegewide about our new SSS model, which will provide a more effective, student-centered approach in SCC's new four-campus operation. In the meantime, please continue to contact the same SCC constituents for student service and development-related questions and issues.

Endowed Teaching Chairs

Three SCC faculty members have been awarded Endowed Teaching Chairs. Congratulations to professors Nana Robertson (Child Development), Trent Tomengo (Humanities) and Patti Yorti (Nursing) who have distinguished themselves with their excellence in teaching. They were recognized during last week's Spring Commencement Ceremony and will each receive an SCC Foundation $5000 Endowed Teaching Chair Award.

Emergency Plans/Safety on Campus

If you have not done so already, please sign up for SCC's emergency text messaging capability that can be utilized in an emergency situation to communicate with SCC students and employees, as well as interested community constituents. This text messaging is a subset of Seminole County's current text messaging alert system. To sign up:
