2008 Updates

First Wednesday Update: March 5, 2008

PeopleSoft Upgrade Over Spring Break

The next generation of our PeopleSoft system will "go live" after SCC's Spring Break next week. Many thanks to the SCC constituents who will be working throughout Spring Break to accomplish this upgrade which will improve the functionality and capabilities of MySCC applications. Remember, in preparation for the Spring Break upgrade, all MySCC PeopleSoft functions and the TIM system will be unavailable Friday, March 7 through Sunday, March 16. However, GroupWise, Angel, and the SCC website will not be affected during this upgrade - there will be no interruption of service for those areas. Finally, please be sure to turn off all computers and office equipment prior to departing for Spring Break.

SCC Core Values

As Dr. McGee announced earlier this week, new "SCC Core Values" and their supporting action statements have been developed by your colleagues. We will now look to these "SCC Core Values" to better articulate the character and essence of our institution, to describe how people expect themselves and others to behave, to set standards, and to drive our College's priorities. Our "SCC Core Values" are:

Respect
  • We embrace diversity and inclusion in the college community we serve.
  • We treat each other with fairness and dignity. We appreciate the unique attributes of all individuals and recognize their importance in our world.
  • We strive to create an environment of mutual respect.
Integrity
  • We adhere to the highest ethical standards in our conduct.
  • We ensure that our policies, procedures, practices and actions are free from bias.
Excellence
  • We strive for excellence in all we do.
  • We believe that each of us can provide leadership to deliver outstanding educational experiences, exceptional student services, and a unique, distinctive academic environment.
Knowledge
  • We believe that everyone should have access to learning opportunities.
  • We are committed to supporting our college community in the pursuit of knowledge.
Academic freedom
  • We are committed to intellectual inquiry, academic rigor, thoughtful exploration, and the civil exchange of ideas.
  • We protect and foster independence of thought and speech, maintaining an atmosphere in which everyone can explore the full spectrum of ideas, opinions, and beliefs.

Emergency Text Messaging

If you have not done so already, please sign up for SCC's emergency text messaging capability that can be utilized in an emergency situation to communicate with SCC students, SCC employees, and interested community constituents. With blustery spring weather upon us and hurricane season on the horizon, now is a good time to sign up to receive special weather alerts and other emergency information about our community and SCC. This text messaging is a subset of Seminole County’s current text messaging alert system, so there is no cost to SCC. Here's how to sign up:

  • Go online to https://www.alertseminole.org.
  • Click the "Register" button.
  • Complete the requested information including how you wish to be notified (select a phone for text messaging and/or e-mail) and what you wish to be notified about (weather and/or other emergency).
  • Be sure to select Seminole Community College as the group - near the bottom of the page.
  • Click "continue" to select additional options or to complete the enrollment process.

Once you have finished, you should receive any requested emergency information from Seminole County and any emergency text messages from SCC.

SCC Board of Trustees

The appointments of Chick Gregg and Scott Howat have been approved by the Senate Committee, and now will go to a full Senate vote for confirmation.

2008 Legislative Session

Florida's legislative session has convened this week and last night Governor Crist delivered his "State of the State" address. The Legislature's first task will be to deal with cuts to the remaining 2007-08 state budget. Further statewide reductions are being proposed and should be voted on by the time we return from Spring Break. However, we are hopeful that our budget reductions made earlier this year, coupled with SCC's and the system's enrollment increases and our critical role in the economic recovery of Florida, should serve us well and shield us from a drastic change in our remaining 2007-08 budget.
